Why Does Jewellery Turn Skin Green? Causes and Care
Understand colour residue, read material and finish details, and recognise when skin symptoms need separate attention.
Jewellery can leave a green mark when metal reacts with moisture or products on the skin. Copper is a common cause, but a mark alone does not identify the metal or diagnose an allergy. The useful next steps are to check the piece's material and finish, follow its care instructions, and treat irritation as a separate concern.
Why can jewellery leave a green mark?
According to Nebraska Medicine dermatologist Jennifer Adams, MD, copper can react with sweat, lotion and other products, leaving green residue. Other metals can also be involved. On some plated jewellery, an outer layer that has worn away can expose the metal beneath. This describes a possible cause, rather than a test for the construction of an individual piece.
A surface mark and a rash need different attention
A colour mark may be residue. An itchy or painful rash is a different observation: the American Academy of Dermatology explains that jewellery can cause contact dermatitis. Stop wearing a piece if it irritates your skin. If symptoms persist or return, seek advice from a qualified health professional.

What to check before choosing jewellery
- The listed material: read the exact design's specifications instead of guessing its composition from its appearance.
- The finish: check the coating information separately from the underlying material. Our PVD plating guide explains the process.
- The complete design: pearls, shell and other decorative components may have their own care needs. Use the Materials & Care guide alongside the product listing.
- Your own requirements: if a particular material detail matters and is not stated, ask our team before ordering.
For a current example of how specifications are listed, the Nixie Chic Bracelet names stainless steel and offers an 18K Gold option with PVD plating or a Silver option with a silver-tone PVD finish. Reef & Rose pieces are designed to be waterproof and tarnish free with PVD plating, including silver-tone designs. These details describe the products; they do not predict every individual's skin response.

Browse the bracelet collection to compare designs, then read each piece's own specifications rather than applying one product's details to the whole range.
Can a green mark be washed off?
Nebraska Medicine's dermatologist says green residue can be washed from skin with soap and water. That skin-cleaning advice is separate from cleaning jewellery: follow the piece's care instructions and avoid experimenting with household coatings or harsh cleaners.
Common questions
Does a green mark mean jewellery is fake?
Colour transfer is not an authentication test. Check the seller's stated material and finish information; the mark alone cannot establish the composition or authenticity of the item.
