The word “waterproof” can feel vague unless you understand the finish and the complete piece. Base metal, coating, decorative components and construction all affect how jewellery should be cared for.

What is PVD plating?

Physical vapour deposition, usually shortened to PVD, is a process used to apply a thin decorative coating to a base material inside a controlled vacuum environment. PVD is still a finish, not a claim that jewellery is indestructible. Scraping a piece against stone, exposing it to aggressive chemicals or repeatedly striking it against hard surfaces can affect any jewellery. Good construction and sensible care still matter.

How is PVD different from electroplating?

Both processes apply a coating to a surface, but they work differently. PVD (physical vapour deposition) forms a coating by depositing material from vapour in a vacuum. Electroplating deposits a metallic coating from an electrolyte solution using an electric current. The process name alone does not identify a piece’s base material or establish how a finished design will perform. PVD finish and base metal

PVD is a coating process, rather than a base-metal name. For comparison, the FTC’s U.S. consumer guide describes vermeil as gold plating over sterling silver. Can you swim or shower in Reef & Rose jewellery?

Yes. All Reef & Rose pieces are designed to be waterproof and tarnish free with PVD plating, including silver-tone styles. After showering or pool/ocean exposure, rinse with fresh water and dry the complete piece fully. Pearls, shell, stones and strung details still benefit from gentle maintenance.

What should you avoid?

Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals, prolonged exposure to concentrated perfumes or lotions, and impact against hard surfaces. Pearl and shell components need material-specific care. Store pieces separately when you are not wearing them to reduce scratching and tangling.
