What Makes Jewellery Waterproof? PVD Plating Explained

A plain-English guide to PVD plating, stainless steel and what “waterproof jewellery” means for everyday wear.

1 min read

Waterproof jewellery should fit the life you actually live: ocean swims, workouts, showers and warm-weather days included. But the word “waterproof” can feel vague unless you understand what sits beneath the finish.

What is PVD plating?

Physical vapour deposition, usually shortened to PVD, is a process used to apply a thin decorative coating to a base material inside a controlled vacuum environment. At Reef & Rose, pieces are finished in gold or silver-tone PVD over stainless steel. The result is designed to be more durable for regular contact with water and sweat than delicate traditional fashion-jewellery finishes.

PVD is still a finish, not a claim that jewellery is indestructible. Scraping a piece against stone, exposing it to aggressive chemicals or repeatedly striking it against hard surfaces can affect any jewellery. Good construction and sensible care still matter.

Why stainless steel?

Stainless steel provides a stable, practical foundation for pieces intended for frequent wear. It is well suited to jewellery that moves between the beach, gym and everyday life. The exact look and construction vary by design, so always read the product description for piece-specific details.

Can you swim in Reef & Rose jewellery?

Our jewellery is designed for water and sweat. After swimming in salt water or a chlorinated pool, rinse the piece with fresh water and dry it thoroughly. This quick habit removes residue and helps keep the surface looking polished.

What should you avoid?

Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals, prolonged exposure to concentrated perfumes or lotions, and impact against hard surfaces. Natural pearls and shell components deserve particular care because they are organic materials. Store pieces separately when you are not wearing them to reduce scratching and tangling.

For the full routine, read our Materials & Care guide. Reef & Rose pieces are also supported by our Lifetime Colour Warranty, subject to the warranty terms and assessment.
