Twisted Hoop Earrings: Shape, Size and Styling

A close-up guide to twisted hoop detail, with Cleo and smooth Vienna examples to help compare shape, opening and styling.

Twisted hoop earrings put a repeating spiral-like detail around a curved hoop. If you like a hoop outline but want more detail than a smooth surface, look closely at the direction and spacing of the ridges. Then compare the complete size, inner opening and fastening of the pair you are considering.

What gives a twisted hoop its look?

In a twisted design, diagonal ridges and grooves travel around the hoop, creating a rope-like visual rhythm. The name describes the appearance; it does not tell you how the earring was manufactured. A twisted hoop can still have a polished, shiny surface.

The Cleo Twisted Hoops Earrings show that repeating detail clearly. In the close-up below, the raised sections curve diagonally around the thicker body, while the narrower post is smooth. Follow the pattern around the curve to decide whether it is the detail you want to notice.

Twisted or smooth: which detail do you prefer?

Compare Cleo with the Vienna Classic Hoop Earrings in Mini Gold. Vienna has a smooth, rounded body. Its curve creates a more continuous line, while Cleo’s diagonal pattern adds another detail within the hoop outline.

Vienna illustrates the smooth profile. Use the selected size’s listed dimensions when comparing.

Look at each design from the front and side in its product gallery. Choose Cleo if the repeated spiral-like pattern is what draws your eye, or Vienna if you prefer the simpler smooth line. For a different kind of texture, our hammered jewellery guide shows dimpled surfaces rather than a twisting pattern.

Compare the opening as well as the outside size

Cleo’s current listing gives an approximate 14 mm outside diameter, 10 mm inside diameter and 2 mm hoop thickness. Vienna Mini lists a 14 mm outside diameter and 9 mm inside diameter. The same outside figure therefore does not mean the two designs have the same inner opening.

Keep those measurements separate when comparing with a hoop you already wear. Vienna also has Medium and Large size options; selecting one of those changes the comparison. Our earring size guide explains how to read inside and outside diameters. The photographs show the designs in separate compositions, rather than a life-size side-by-side comparison.

Let the twist lead, or repeat it in another piece

For a simple starting point, wear the hoops on their own and see how the pattern looks with your outfit and hairstyle. If you want a necklace too, decide whether to repeat a rope-like line or contrast it with a smoother shape. A repeated texture can connect the pieces visually without making them a matching set.

Our chain-types guide includes a rope-chain example alongside other patterns. For arranging multiple earring pairs, continue to the ear-stack guide; a single pair is equally an option.

Before choosing a pair

  • Check the twist in a close-up and the complete hoop from another angle.
  • Compare the inner opening and outside size for the exact option selected.
  • Look at the fastening in the product gallery, separately from the decorative pattern.
  • Choose your finish: Cleo currently lists Gold and Silver options, and is sold as a pair of two earrings.

Browse the earrings collection to compare the current designs. Open the individual product page for its options and details before choosing.
