Ring Band Width vs Thickness: How to Read Ring Measurements

Learn the difference between ring band width, thickness and size, with a clear diagram and Estelle and Cosima product examples.

Ring band cross-section showing the difference between width and thickness

Ring band width and thickness describe different directions across a band. Neither is the same as the ring size you select for your finger. Here is how to read those measurements, with examples from the Estelle Sunrise Ring and Cosima Eternity Ring.

What is the difference between band width and thickness?

  • Band width runs from one edge of the band to the other.
  • Band thickness runs through the band, from the inner surface that faces your finger to the outer surface.

The diagram below shows the two directions through one plain section of a band. A shaped ring face or a raised setting may have its own dimensions, so check which part the product specification describes.

Estelle: a listing with both measurements

The Estelle Sunrise Ring lists a band width of 1.6 mm and a thickness of 1.3 mm. Those numbers refer to two different dimensions of its band. The band-width value is not a measurement of the whole sunrise-shaped face.

Cosima: a listing with band width

The Cosima Eternity Ring lists a band width of 6.7 mm. Its current product details do not give a thickness value. Read the published width as width; it does not also establish the thickness or the inside diameter.

Cosima’s listing gives its 6.7 mm band width. Its close-up photograph does not supply a missing thickness measurement.

Which measurement tells you your ring size?

Ring size is a separate selection for finger fit. A 6.7 mm band width is not a size 6.7 ring, and Estelle’s 1.3 mm thickness is not its inside diameter. For finger measurement and checking a listed size, use our ring-size guide.

What to check before choosing a design

  1. Read whether the listed number describes the band, the decorative face or a stone.
  2. Compare width with width and thickness with thickness.
  3. Choose your size separately using the product’s available size options.
  4. If a dimension you need is missing, contact us rather than estimating it from a photograph.

Explore the ring collection and open each design’s details to compare its published specifications.
