Pearl Size Guide: Reading Millimetres and Drop Measurements
Read pearl diameter, length, width and size ranges with Elara and Saskia examples, keeping pearl size separate from the complete piece.
Pearl size is usually given in millimetres, but the number needs a shape and a measurement label to make it useful. A round pearl’s diameter, an oval pearl’s width and a hanging pearl drop’s measurement are not automatically the same dimension. Read the size of the pearl separately from the length of the necklace or the full height of an earring.
Diameter, length and width describe different directions
GIA’s explanation of pearl size uses diameter for round and near-round pearls, and length/depth and diameter/width for other shapes. For an oval or irregular pearl, one number may not describe its complete outline.
A hypothetical pearl described as 8 mm long × 6 mm wide has two different spans. It is not the same shape as a round pearl described as 8 mm in diameter. These numbers are an illustration of reading dimensions, not measurements of a Reef & Rose product.
Reading a pearl-size range: Elara
The Elara Freshwater Pearl Choker currently lists an approximate necklace length of 36–40 cm and pearls of 3.5–4 mm. The centimetre range describes the necklace; the millimetre range refers to its pearls.

The pearl-size range is not a choice between two necklace lengths. Nor does it promise that every pearl is an identical size. Because the listing does not name the direction of that 3.5–4 mm measurement, keep the wording as listed instead of calling it a verified pearl length or diameter.
Reading a pearl-drop measurement: Saskia
The Saskia Freshwater Pearl Hoop Earrings list freshwater baroque pearl drops and an approximate 12 mm pearl drop. Their hoop is listed separately at 13 mm outside diameter and 9 mm inside diameter.

The 12 mm figure is labelled as a pearl-drop measurement, not a round-pearl diameter or the full earring height. The listing does not specify both the drop’s length and width, so do not assume it is 12 mm in every direction. Use the earring size guide for the separate question of hoop dimensions and overall drop.
A small unit change can make the numbers clearer
There are 10 mm in 1 cm. For reading a listing, 4 mm is 0.4 cm, 8 mm is 0.8 cm and 12 mm is 1.2 cm. A ruler can help you picture a stated span; it cannot supply a missing measurement direction.
When comparing products, write down the number, unit, shape and the part being measured. Compare diameter with diameter or length with length. If one page gives only “pearl drop” and another gives a size range without an axis, ask for the missing detail before treating them as a precise size comparison.
Choose size separately from pearl type and necklace length
A size number does not establish a pearl’s origin, natural or cultured classification, grade or quality. Our pearl terminology guide covers those different descriptions. The necklace length guide helps with the length of the complete piece.
Browse pearl-accented jewellery, then read the individual design’s current dimensions alongside its close-ups. If a dimension you need is not stated, ask our team before choosing.
