How to Wear a Necklace with a Collared Shirt
Compare open-collar and buttoned-shirt arrangements, then check chain length, pendant drop and the button line with Kaia and Oriana examples.
To choose a necklace for a collared shirt, fasten the shirt the way you plan to wear it before comparing jewellery. The open space between the collar points changes when you undo a button, and a necklace can sit against skin or over the fabric. Try those arrangements separately, then check that the chain and pendant remain visible when you move.

With an open collar: keep track of the fabric edge
Put on the shirt and settle the collar first. Try one necklace inside the opening, then look from the front and side. Check whether the chain stays inside the open area, crosses the shirt edge or disappears beneath one side. None of those positions is a fixed fashion rule; choose the arrangement you actually like wearing.
A chain without a separate hanging pendant is one starting point. The Kaia Rope Chain Necklace has a twisted rope pattern along its length, so the chain itself supplies the detail.

Kaia currently lists approximately 39 cm plus a 5 cm extender and a 2 mm chain width, with Gold, Silver and Rose Gold options. Compare that length with a necklace you own before assuming it will sit inside your particular collar opening.
With a pendant: check the drop and the button line
If you want one central detail, try a pendant inside the open collar. Check where it lands relative to the next fastened button. If the pendant repeatedly slips behind the placket or rests across the fabric edge, compare a different fastening position or leave that necklace for another shirt.
The Oriana Astra Necklace combines spaced bead-like chain details with a clear teardrop pendant. Its listed 45 cm chain plus a 5 cm extender is separate from the approximate 8 mm high × 6 mm wide pendant stone; the bead chain width is 1.5 mm.

Oriana currently lists Gold and Silver options. The two necklace photographs are separate product arrangements, not a calibrated length comparison. For interpreting the stone and pendant dimensions, use our pendant measurements guide.
With the shirt buttoned higher: try the necklace over the fabric
A higher fastening position may leave little skin visible between the collar points. Try the necklace over the shirt instead, checking how the chain sits beneath the folded collar and where its centre falls against the buttons. Keep the chain clear of any button fastening; do not use the shirt button as a jewellery clasp.
Check the shirt’s texture and print in the complete view. If the necklace disappears against a detailed placket or sits awkwardly under the collar, leaving the neckline clear is another option. You can choose earrings as your separate detail without adding another necklace.
A two-minute check before choosing
- Compare the shirt at the button height you actually want to wear.
- Try one necklace inside the opening or over the fabric, rather than mixing the two arrangements immediately.
- Turn your head, sit down and move your shoulders. Check whether the collar folds over the chain or the pendant moves behind the button line.
- Try any jacket or cardigan you plan to add, then compare the full outfit again.
Use our necklace length and layering guide to compare measurements before adding a second chain. If the shirt is part of your working day, the work jewellery guide covers separate headset, desk and video-call considerations.
Browse current necklaces, then check the individual design’s length, pendant and selected finish. The useful choice is the necklace-and-shirt arrangement you enjoy, rather than a universal necklace length for every collar.
