Huggie vs Hoop Earrings: Shape, Size & Fit

Huggies are a type of hoop earring. Compare Dalia and Vienna designs, understand inside versus outside measurements, and choose the detail you prefer.

A huggie is a type of small hoop earring intended to sit close to the ear. “Hoop” is the broader shape category, with designs ranging from small circles to larger, more noticeable outlines. When choosing between them, compare the actual measurements and details of the pair rather than assuming the style name guarantees a particular fit.

Is a huggie different from a hoop?

The names overlap. A huggie still has a hoop form; the name describes the close-fitting look it is designed to create. It can be plain, textured or decorated with small accents. A product simply called a hoop may also be small, so the words do not divide every earring into two fixed size ranges.

Start by choosing the shape and surface you enjoy, then check the space inside the hoop and the overall size. Those measurements answer different questions.

A decorated huggie example: Dalia

The Dalia Mini Pearl Huggies Earrings combine a hoop shape with five small mother-of-pearl accents per hoop. The product listing gives an approximate overall size of 18 × 18 mm per earring, with Gold and Silver colour options. They are sold as a pair.

The 18 × 18 mm measurement describes the complete earring, not its internal opening. The current listing does not state an inside diameter, so ask our team if you need that detail to compare the fit. The word “huggie” alone cannot tell you where it will sit on your ear.

A smooth hoop example: Vienna

The Vienna Classic Hoop Earrings have a smooth, rounded profile. Their current options are Mini, Medium and Large, with Gold and Silver colours. Like Dalia, Vienna is sold as a pair of two earrings.

For example, Vienna Mini is listed with a 14 mm outside diameter and a 9 mm inside diameter. That outside measurement is smaller than Dalia’s listed 18 mm overall size, even though Dalia’s product name includes “Mini” and “Huggies”. This is why names should be a starting point, with measurements guiding the final comparison.

Inside diameter and outside diameter are different

The outside diameter describes the hoop’s full outline. The inside diameter describes the opening within it. Decoration and the thickness of the hoop occupy some of the overall size, so two earrings with similar outside dimensions may have different internal openings.

Compare like with like: inside diameter with inside diameter, and complete height or outside diameter with the corresponding full measurement. Our earring size guide explains these measurements and lists more current product examples. It is the place to continue if size is your main question.

Does “huggie” tell you how it fastens?

Check the particular design. Dalia’s product gallery shows straight posts and separate butterfly backs, as pictured below. The style name does not establish a hinged fastening. Looking at the closure is useful if you have a preference about putting earrings on and taking them off.

Choose between a plain outline and an accent detail

If you prefer a continuous polished shape, look at Vienna’s rounded profile. If you enjoy small white accents along the front of a hoop, Dalia offers that different detail. Both can be worn as a pair on their own; neither requires an earring stack.

When combining earrings with a necklace, try the pieces with the outfit and hairstyle you plan to wear. Let one detail lead, or repeat a colour or shape if you want the combination to feel connected. For more ideas, see our earring styling guide.

Before choosing your pair

  • Check the dimensions for the exact size option you select.
  • Confirm whether the measurement refers to the complete earring or its internal opening.
  • Review the fastening in the product gallery and ask about a detail that is unclear.
  • Confirm the colour option and whether the listing is for one earring or a pair.

Use a pair you already enjoy wearing as a personal reference, and follow the care guidance for the complete piece. Browse the earrings collection to compare huggie, hoop and other shapes, then open the individual product page for its current options.
