A lobster clasp opens when you press its small lever and closes when you release it. To fasten it, open the clasp, pass the receiving ring or suitable extender link through the opening, then release the lever and check that the gate has closed completely. Here is how to find the parts and choose an extender position without pulling on the chain.

Find the clasp, lever and receiving link

The clasp is the hook-shaped fastening at one end of a chain. Its small projecting lever operates the opening gate. The ring or extension chain at the opposite end gives the clasp somewhere to attach. The decorative tag at the end of an extender is a different part: use an attachment ring or link that fits the clasp, rather than trying to clip onto the tag itself.

Jewellery supplier Santa Fe Jewelers Supply describes the lever-operated spring mechanism. The shape, size and attachment arrangement vary between finished pieces; that general mechanism does not establish a particular clasp's strength or material.

How to fasten a lobster clasp

  1. Bring both ends together. Work in good light. Hold the clasp body at one end and the receiving ring or intended extender link at the other, keeping the chain relaxed.
  2. Press the lever. Use a fingertip or nail to move the small lever and open the gate. Do not try to prise the gate apart or pull the chain to open it.
  3. Pass the ring or link through the opening. Keep the gate open while guiding the receiving ring into the clasp. Make sure the link fits freely; do not force a thick link into a narrow opening.
  4. Release and check. Let go of the lever so the gate returns to its closed position. Look closely to confirm that the ring is inside the clasp and the gate is fully shut, with no hair or fabric trapped.

To remove the piece, support both ends, press the lever again and guide the receiving link out through the opening. Avoid pulling the chain against a closed gate.

How the extender changes the fit

An extension chain offers additional attachment positions. Where its links are designed to receive the clasp, fastening farther along the extender gives a longer finished loop; moving back towards the main chain makes it shorter. Use only a link that the clasp can pass through and close around completely.

The Katia Quatrefoil Bracelet currently lists a lobster clasp, an approximate 16 cm length plus a 4–5 cm extender, and Gold and Silver options. That is Katia's listing, not a standard length for every bracelet. Check the selected design's own specifications and compare them with a piece you already find comfortable.

For measuring your wrist, use our bracelet size guide. For necklace placement and spacing, see the necklace layering guide. An extender gives adjustment positions; it does not guarantee the same fit on every person.

What if the clasp is difficult to use?

Try operating it while the piece is off your body first, so you can see the lever and opening clearly. For a necklace, a mirror may help you check the fastening; for a bracelet, asking someone to help can make aligning the two ends easier. Before choosing a design, look at its closure photographs as well as its decorative details.

If the lever sticks, the gate stays open or the receiving link will not fit, stop rather than forcing or bending the parts. Contact our team with the product name and a clear photograph. Follow the Materials & Care guidance for the complete piece; do not add household oils or attempt to reshape the clasp.

Lobster-clasp questions

Is a lobster clasp the same as a magnetic clasp?

No. A lobster clasp has a lever-operated gate; it does not fasten by simply bringing two magnetic ends together. Check the fastening on the individual design rather than assuming every chain uses the same closure.

Can I attach it to any extender link?

Only use a suitable receiving link that fits through the opening and lets the gate close fully. Link sizes and arrangements differ. If it does not fit freely, choose another intended attachment position or ask for help.

Does every Reef & Rose bracelet use this clasp?

No single fastening should be assumed across the range. Katia explicitly lists a lobster clasp; other bracelets and bangles have their own construction and fit details. Browse the bracelet collection and check each product page before choosing.
